Yes, even in Quartzsite  the town many had hoped would be virtually exempt from the struggles the rest of the nation is encountering, is feeling the pinch as the U.S. economy takes a nose dive.

And, believe it or not, many companies are essentially being legislated out of business as burgeoning governmental officials tightening restrictions bring a swift end to those companies that had planned to 'hold steady course' -- at least until the economy had had a chance to recover.

Now, with stricter regulations on business, more are tossing in the towel, citing reasons ranging from 'we're making no money' to 'it's time to retire.'

And who can blame them? It's bad enough to find themselves in a sinking market -- but to have to battle inside and outside forces at the same time is proving, in many instances, to be impossible.

And once these businesses are gone -- what then?

With a deteriorating business base will come increased taxation of the population to offset those financial losses brought to bear by businesses no longer able to maintain solvency under the new legislation.

This comes as no surprised, of course, to the governmental agencies implementing these changes -- as they have watched many businesses falter and then fold as new rules and regulations take effect.

Indeed, barely a business is left unscathed as the 'ripple effect' of failing businesses begins to take hold.

One would think that by the time 2009 rolled around, Internet access problems would be a thing of the past.
Not so. Some of the old companies with the worst reputations started the same games under new names [DirecTV became HUGHES.NET] and started signing consumers again -- largely without a proper warning by the [corporate] press. How do you avoid getting scammed?

Ask in advance about their FAP record [they shut off your Internet if you use it too much] and -- even if your use is limited, you can find yourself with having violated their policies -- so call them and let them know you are recording the call -- or ask to 'get that in writing' before signing a contract with them. Google their company name name online followed by a word like 'scam' or 'rip-off' or 'I hate [COMPANY NAME]'. If you hit into thousands of hits -- and especially if you discover 40,000 hits or more, you can bet there's a bigger problem than just 'run-of-the-mill consumer issues.

It's not all bad news, though, since TDS has brought broadband to those with land line possibilities -- and the Desert Wireless.Net company will soon have wireless access available throughout Quartzsite.

The End of Cell Phone Contracts? Yes! And from an unlikely source...
Finally! WalMart is announcing plans to offer lowcost cellphone plans, triggering the end of the cellphone scams offered by the big three. "Even if it is WalMart, it's a welcome change..."  And speaking of scams: Don't buy into the one that promises to get your number onto a 'do not call' registry...
