Untimely death of Quartzsite Mayor Busby leaves town without Mayor or Vice Mayor

Special Citizen's Coalition meeting to be held Thursday evening at 5:30 P.M. at the Taco Mio Restaurant to field input from community members

Tuesday, November 4, 2008

Following the resignation of Quartzsite Mayor Steve Bennett, Charles [Chuck] Busby was appointed to the Mayoral position despite opposition by Quartzsite's Citizen's Coalition.

Busby's health issues were of concern among residents as most were aware that the long term councilman was suffering from cancer.

At that time, the Coalition petitioned the council with over 300 signatures on a signed petition to consider allowing the Mayoral position to be filled via the electoral process.

The accompanying statement, presented orally when the council was given the petition is available in its entirety.

The petition was largely ignored by the council, and Busby was appointed to the interim position designated as 'sitting Mayor.'

The Vice Mayor position Busby vacated remained unfilled and now, with Busby's death, Quartzsite has  subsequently been left with neither a Mayor nor a Vice Mayor.

This is a precarious position for the town and the issue needs to be addressed in a timely manner.

The special Citizen's Coalition Meeting  held at Taco Mio Thursday, November 6, 2008, featured a forum for open discussion on community matters. The group is going forward with the plan to have an election for a new Mayor.
At the Town Council special meeting at 3 p.m. Thursday,  the council appointed councilman Walt Akin to the interim position Busby held: that of 'sitting' or 'acting' Mayor. At the meeting, three-term Mayor C. Richard Oldham spoke to the council, indicating that the town's citizens had always made it clear that they wanted to vote in a Mayor. One councilman, Hal Lindsey, stated a special election would cost the town about $10,000.00

Akin's position will be as 'acting Mayor' until an election is held.

Another plane landed in Quartzsite Friday at the old Desert Gardens runway once known as CONNOR FIELD. Once again, the necessity of having an air strip is Quartzsite is apparent and even one designated for emergency use would be very valuable to the community as a whole.
